The Trek Day 1 - November 16

After breakfast and a group stretch, we begin along a sealed road away from the town. The mountains are behind us and seem a huge distance away, impossible to reach, let alone climb.

After about 1.5hrs, the rod changes to a dirt track, and we reach the village of Barnat and stop for chai and chapatis, cooked in a pan over a coal fire in a room of the house. We pass through Stobari village, a small group of a dozen houses, an hour or so of easy rambling on a well worn open air track, and shortly after stop for lunch. We are being gently introduced to trekking, as the age range of the group goes from 16 (Tom, from Lennox Head) and 67 (Gel, a cook and B&B manager froma town near Dubbo) and the fitness range is just as wide.

The afternoon is an increasingly difficult uphill climb to camp, and by the time we get there, Beck is feeling as unwell as I am. The site is in a valley surrounded by low hills, a river and sheep. Beck gets nausea tablets from the doctor (Rajiv) and sleeps til dinner. At night, and when going to bed, it feels like I have every item of clothing I have brought with me on - undershirt, thermal top, long sleeved shirt, jumper, jacket, thermal pants, jeans, thick socks, gloves and hat, and both outside and in the sleeping bag designed for 0 degrees, it is still cold. Beck goes to the campfire and connects with the group and I go to sleep.
